10 Expert Ubuntu Tricks

Recently I started work on a new Ubuntu tips book that will partner my existing title, Ubuntu Kung Fu . The new book is still being planned and won’t be published until next year, but I thought I’d share 10 tips that are on my list to be included. If you have any others that you think would go into such a book, put them in the comments below. I’d love to hear them, as would other readers, I’m sure.

These tips aren’t Ubuntu-specific, but they’ve been tested on Ubuntu, and I can’t guarantee they’ll work on other distros. You might already know about some or all of them them, but resist the temptation to gloat about this in the comments. You’re just extra clever, OK?

15 Great Ubuntu Tips For Linux Power Users

A few days back I wrote about books that beginners can download and read to teach themselves Linux. Today in the Linux section we have something for the power users. Here are a few tips you should try out if you are an avid Ubuntu Linux user

Lets install the latest Grub 2 on Ubuntu 9.04

Most of the Linux distributions that we use today, have the GRand Unified Boot-loader as their default boot-loader. Recently the developers of GRUB (GNU) have released the latest version GRUB 2 which have lots of improvements compared to its previous version. By default Ubuntu 9.04 comes with the old GRUBbootloader, so today we are going to see how to install the new GRUB 2 on our favourite Ubuntu 9.04!

How To Easily Change Ubuntu Usplash Screen

I remember when I first booted up Ubuntu on my computer three years ago that I wasn’t very impressed with the dull black usplash screen. It gave me a feeling that I was back to the Windows 95 era.

Three years down the road, even though the Ubuntu team has made changes and improvements to the usplash screen, it is still nowhere close to beautiful. Luckily, a good thing about Linux (and Ubuntu) is that it is fully customizable and you can tweak every single part to your liking. That is to say, even though the default does not come with a beautiful usplash screen, you can still change ubuntu usplash screen to display your favorite image.

OK, I installed Ubuntu! now what?

What most people used to do is just install any OS and start their work, they don’t care about security…. they don’t care about the integrity of the system….. so the life span of those systems are very small! After some time they get…. viruses…. corrupted files……continues system errors and many more…

We must establish our base camp before going to War! We must build a strong camp before the enemy……. enough of that war stuff!! lets get into the topic…. lets see, what really should we have to do after installing Ubuntu?

Ubuntu Linux : How to fix Nvidia X-Server Settings error

Many people who have Nvidia VGA drives face this problem, most of the time we get an error while trying to save display settings from the nvidia x-server settings manager, so after we restart the system the settings are been reset!

I also faced this problem because Im using a Nvidia VGA…. so I searched the net for a correct solution but I always got long, incomplete instructions, so I had to refer to multiple sites to do my job! But at the end I found out that the solution is simpler than it looks!

Installing 64-bit Adobe Flash Player 10 on Ubuntu

Today I needed to install the Adobe Flash Player in Firefox on my Dell Vostro 200 ST running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 8.10 in order to test a Perl module that I had written; the module was used by a Perl program to generate a web page with embedded Flash. When I looked for instructions I stumbled upon the news that Adobe finally had released an alpha version of a 64-bit Flash player earlier this month. Finally no more need for nspluginwrapper on a 64-bit GNU/Linux operating system.

Install the latest Nvidia and ATI drivers easily via Envy (in Ubuntu)

When I first installed Ubuntu i had a serious problem with my graphic drivers! Ubuntu doesn’t install the correct drivers, and it messed up my resolution settings which were set to a very low value. So i surfed the net for almost three days and finally found Envy which saved my life!

Make Compiz Run Smoothly and Without Tearing

For a long time it has bothered me that Compiz does not seem to run as smoothly as Metacity on my desktop system. With desktop effects switched off, moving windows around the screen would seem smoother. With desktop effects switched on, I’d also notice tearing in areas of the screen with fast motion including in videos. I was fiddling with Compiz settings recently and managed to fix the problem entirely. Now, if your graphics card struggles to run Compiz this will probably not help you. But if you have a decent graphics card (mine is a nVidia GeForce 8600 GT) give this a try if you have noticed this problem.

BashStyle-NG – Change look and feel of your Bash,Vim and Nano

BashStyle-NG is a graphical Tool for changing the Bash’s behaviour and look’n’feel. Aswell as Readline’s, Nano’s and Vim’s.

It shipps a huge scriptchain, that is used by the styles shipped with BS-NG, but can also be used separately. Since v6.3 you have the opportunity to create your own prompts. For important notes on how to do so, refer back to the documentation.
