How To Install Windows Programs on Linux Using Wine

WinehqThink that your a windows users who need to test Linux. Now you installed Linux, downloaded your favorite software, and now your trying to install them. Why can’t I run exe files on Linux? That will be your question… Now, lets learn why this is happening, and how to solve this!

Linux is a totally different operating system. It have its own way of doing things. In windows we have .exe files which is the normal executable format. In Linux, we have rpm, deb and many more. But they doesn’t support exe files. The reason is the resources needed by windows applications cannot be found in the Linux environment. For example : you cannot find the necessary dll files on Linux! So, to solve that, we can use a small software called Wine. According to Wikipedia :

Wine implements a compatibility layer, providing alternative implementations of the DLLs that Windows programs call, and processes to substitute for the Windows NT kernel.

Now, How to install wine?

On Ubuntu :

  • Open the terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and enter the following command :

sudo apt-get install wine

On other systems :

After you download and install Wine, simply double click on an exe file to run it. Or right click on the exe file and select “Open With Wine Windows Program Loader”.
