Ubuntu have hundreds of servers around the world ready to serve us with the latest updates and software packages. When you update your system or install a software, Ubuntu used to download the required packages from one of these servers. Some servers are really slow, some are slow at different parts of the day and some will serve you super fast! So, do you know how to choose the best server which will fit you? Lets find out…
As I said earlier, Ubuntu have several servers in the world ready to provide you with the necessary updates and software packages. Now, when your installing Ubuntu, (if you have an active Internet connection during the installation) they will automatically select the server which will provide the fastest connection to your area.
But, some times you might feel that your downloads are getting slower. This may happen, if the server your using gets too many connections or due to other connection problems. So, to avoid this, we need to choose a different server. Lets see how to do this :
- In the main menu, go to System > Administration > Software Sources
- Now, click on “Download from” field and select “Other”
- After that, a new window will appear called “Choose a Download Server”
- In here, you can select one server from the list or, to be more perfect, click on “Select Best Server“. Now, Ubuntu will connect to all the servers and check what is the fastest, and select it automatically. After your done selecting, you can click “Choose Server”.
Now, your ready to feel the power of the fastest server for your region! So, what do you think? Did it really improve your download speeds? Please feel free to share your ideas with us!
